Just over a year after showing off a new Full HD smartphone display, LG's Display wing has taken the wraps off a new variant that's being hailed as the world's thinnest. The working 5.2-inch panel boasts a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution, and represents the first outing for a proprietary touch technology called Advanced One-Glass-Solution, where two flexible printed circuits are positioned between the glass and the touch layer.
Leveraging a direct bonding system has also led to a high brightness panel. The 535-nit display's reported contrast ratio of 3.74:1 based on 10,000 luxshould make it a good outdoor performer, even in strong sunlight.
This has allowed LG Display to get the total thickness down to just 2.2 mm thin, while a 2.3 mm bezel will give users a larger viewing area and an improved viewing experience over existing technologies. The developers say that the results have been independently-verified by global testing group Intertek.
The company can't say when, or even if, the results of its latest endeavors will hit the consumer space, but we'd hazard a guess that it won't be too long before smartphones even thinner and lighter than the impressively-svelte Ascend P6 start to make an appearance.
LG Display's latest development follows hot on the heals of a decidedly bendy 5-inch plastic OLED panel showcased at the Society for Information Display’s Display Week 2013 recently.
